Hey Men, How Healthy Is Your Bone?
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder that is characterized by decreased bone mass, leading to weak and brittle bones that have higher risk of fractures. Many people view osteoporosis as women's disease, but in fact, it is now estimated that up to one in five men over the age of 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures worldwide. To raise the awareness in men, "osteoporosis in men" was the theme for last month's World Osteoporosis Day (October 20 each year).
There are easy and simple things in daily life which can be done to reduce the risk of osteoporosis:
~ Maintain a balanced diet that is rich in calcium and vitamin D such as dairy products and green leafy vegetables. ~ Be physically active, as weight-bearing exercises such as walking, jogging and weight lifting are helpful in maintaining bone density. ~ Refrain from smoking, since rapid bone loss is another harmful consequence of smoking. ~ Drink alcohol sensibly as excess alcohol will inhibit calcium absorption and bone formation.
