Healthy Eating At Workplace
Hey guys, remember we talked to you about Eating "Five A Day" at the beginning of the year? So, how are you guys doing in that?
For more advice on healthy eating, the Department of Health has recently advocated "Two plus Three Every Day", which recommends a daily intake of at least 2 servings of fruits and 3 servings of vegetables as part of a balanced diet.
Some of you might have found it difficult to adhere to our suggestion, right? Actually, we have had a few members writing to us, expressing that they had found it difficult especially when it came to lunch on working days.
Apart from encouraging you guys to be innovative yourselves, here are two simple suggestions coming from us:
- When eating out, ask for extra portions of vegetables. Get the eateries cater for your request. Exert the power of consumer's choice and make your choice their choice. We have found that most eateries are quite happy to entertain our request. Well, for those who don't, you probably know what to do, right?
- Help make your workplace more healthy-eating friendly. Some simple measures are the provision of refrigerator and microwave oven so that staff members have the option of going to work with self-prepared food, preferably healthier and with more vegetables.
In order to further bring message of healthy eating to the community, the Department of Health has been co-organising with other related organizations a health promotion programme in Millennium City in Kwun Tong, which was launched on 26 September 2005 and is taking place till 21 October 2005. Apart from encouraging the working population to take up the healthy habit of "Two plus Three Every Day", the concept of healthy workplace is also introduced. This helps highlight the fact that employers and employees can work together to improve personal health of the employees. For further information on the programme, please visit the website of the Central Health Education Unit of the Department of Health.
