Tips to prevent colon cancer
Colon cancer is one of the hot health issues in town recently. How much do you know about colon cancer? Do you know how you can reduce your risk of developing colon cancer?
Colon is part of the large intestine. Colon cancer is the result of abnormal growth of cells in the colon. In Hong Kong, colon cancer is the third commonest cancer and the third leading cancer killer. According to local statistics in 2001, an average of five to six persons are diagnosed of colon cancer each day and a daily average of two deaths are caused by colon cancer. In the past 10 years, a rising trend was observed for both new cases and deaths.
A healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of developing colon cancer. Hey guys, to get started, here are some healthy tips:
With respect to diet, if you are not eating much fruits and vegetables, try to include one fruit or some vegetables in every meal from today onwards. Also try to cut down on food that is high in fat, or has been fried or deep-fried.
With respect to daily living, maintaining an optimal body weight by increasing physical activity helps reduce the risk of developing colon cancer. Do you realize that there are plenty of opportunities for exercise in daily life, such as using the stairs instead of escalator in shopping centres, MTR or train stations, or getting off the bus or mini-bus one station earlier and walking to the destination? Of course, if time allows, one should perform exercise daily, but the above tips are a good start for those who are always "too busy" for exercise.
Don't forget to "say no" to smoking as this also helps to reduce the risk of developing colon cancer!
Adopting a healthy lifestyle is a start to prevent colon cancer. Men, you can do it everyday.
