Watch Your Weight Guys!

So, we have all heard about keeping an eye on our weight, right? What is the big deal then?

Being underweight or overweight/obese can both adversely affect our health. For example, people who are underweight are more likely to have reduced bone strength and have less energy reserve; and people who are overweight have an increased risk in developing a range of health problems including diabetes, joint problem, hypertension, coronary heart disease and stroke.

Now I guess you are interested in finding out whether you have normal body weight. A simple way to find out is by calculating the Body Mass Index (BMI).  BMI is a scale for assessing one's weight by using body height and weight. A normal weight range is between BMI 18.5 to 24.9. However, for Asian population, the range is between BMI 18.5 to 22.9.  You are underweight if your BMI is under 18.5, and you are overweight or obese if your BMI is at or above 23.0. To calculate your BMI, simply divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres.

Healthy body weight can be achieved and maintained by having balanced diet, eating in moderation and exercising regularly. The importance of having a healthy body weight is reflected by the theme of this year's International Men's Health Week (13 to 19 June 2005) - "Men and Weight". So guys, start doing the right thing about your weight from now on, if you have not already done so. Here are some easy-to-do tips:

~ Get off transportation vehicles blocks away for more opportunity on foot
~ Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator when possible
~ Go for a brisk walk for about 10 minutes in your lunch break
~ Watch your portion size. And stop eating as soon as you start to feel full
~ When dining, avoid food items that contain high fat contents or too much sugar
~ Choose food that is steamed, boiled, blanched, roasted or baked, instead of fried
~ Stay away from fatty and sugary snacks (e.g. potato chips, candy bars)
~ Trim fat off meat before cooking
~ Remove skin of poultry before eating
