Erectile Dysfunction Injections – Are They Safe?

Erectile dysfunction, also referred to as impotence, is a far-reaching problem amongst males. ED refers to the incapacity to have and maintain an erection. It usually manifests before intercourse occurs.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases notes that ED is a very common condition that affects over 30 million men in the United States. And although ED affects men of all ages, multiple studies have shown that older men are more prone to the condition that their younger counterparts.

ED can be caused by a wide variety of issues; the NIDDK outlined that it is caused mainly by the numerous factors that may affect the vascular, nervous, or endocrine system of an individual.

Treatment of ED can be done by a wide variety of methods. From drugs prescribed by your medical doctor to simple naturally occurring substances that have been proven to alleviate your symptoms. But more recently, a new way has been making the rounds as a new way of dealing with erectile dysfunction.

Known medically as intracavernous injections or better known as penis injections, these treatments require a needle inserted into the penis in a bid to stimulate it in order to get and maintain an erection.

These injections are usually composed of a chemical substance that is injected into the corpora cavernosa of the penis by a tiny syringe. These injected need to be injected into the central area of the shaft and never directly into the glans.

A lot of these injections are known to contain an ingredient known as alprostadil, and it features vasodilation properties which help with blood supply. It is important to note that if a product like this is bought over the internet, the presence of these substances isn’t assured. It is important that one purchases medication like this from licensed chemists.

Getting an erection is a matter of the amount of blood that is present in the corpora cavernosa. And the aim of the injection into that area is to relax the blood vessels and the muscles in the penis to stimulate enough blood flow into them hence causing an erection.

After the injection has been given, an erection is expected to occur between 5 – 20 minutes. Typically, erections like these last for about an hour irrespective of whether there have been erotic stimuli. This is why several doctors ask potential recipients to consider the feelings of their partner before going ahead with the procedure. In some cases, some partners end up feeling left aside or ignored knowing the erection will happen with or without stimuli.

One thing to note with intracavernous injections with alprostadil is that they do not cure erectile dysfunction. Thanks to the chemical induced in the body by the drug, they only cause an erection. Until the cause of ED is discovered and treated properly, patients would continue to depend on the injections every time they need an erection.

Like all other forms of medication, intracavernous injections should not be abused. They should be administered solely based on the doctor’s orders regarding the right dosage as well as the necessary application instructions. User dosages vary by patient, and it is important one does not overdose or under-dose in order to get the right results.

Using these injections have a series of side effects and possible complications which patients need to be aware of. For example, priapism refers to a situation where the erection ceases, but the penis does not return to its flaccid state within two hours from the moment the injection was administered. Priapism should be reported immediately to the doctor as it could result in a serious condition if left untreated.

In addition to this, when injections are administered repeatedly over a medium to long-term in the same area of the penis, one stands the risk of repeated punctures, and this could lead to micro-injuries within the tissues that make up the area. In turn, this often leads to fibrotic plaques (hardened tissue) within the corpora cavernosa. Furthermore, this could end up becoming a more complicated condition known as Peyronie’s disease.

sexual life ahead of them

Because of this, many doctors do not recommend injections like these for men with over 20 years of sexual life ahead of them. It is better to opt for less complicated procedures with little to no side effects.

Other people who are expected to steer clear of these types of injections include:

  • Men who have ever had an allergic reaction to alprostadil.
  • Men who are allergic to any other substances such as drugs, foods, preservatives, or dyes
  • Men that take any prescription or over-the-counter drugs including herbal and dietary supplements
  • Men who have a penile implant
  • Men with a history of priapism (a painful and prolonged erection not linked to sexual stimulation

Another setback to this particular method is in the lack of sexual spontaneity. Because of the uniqueness of the injection which requires the injection to be taken 5 – 20 minutes before stimulation can happen. This could lead the sexual activities to be increasingly artificial or awkward in nature.

Even though intracavernous injections are an easy and straightforward option, it is important to note that they are not for everyone as they aren’t immune to risks. They should be administered by a professional medical doctor and even then, there are is a limit to the number of people they should be prescribedto.

–    Elderly people

–    Men with a low frequency of intercourse.

Regarding successes, intracavernous injections cause erections suitable enough for sex in more than 80% of men suffering from ED irrespective of their age or the cause of their ED.

By design, Intracavernous injections are a temporary solution to ED,and it is imperative it is treated as such. As stated before, long-term exposures to this treatment method carry grave side effects and possible serious and permanent ramifications.

It is necessary to seek medical counsel before proceeding. Better still seek out a practitioner that specializes in erectile dysfunction situations and review the pros and cons of the injections together.
